This was one of those books where you felt, well I never knew that. It’s a small little book but really fascinating. Anyone working in women’s health should read it. Saying that it is a book of course for anyone. It is a book as much about social changes as in prejudice towards women. I did like how she got me to realise other aspects of this useful tool, that aren’t useful.

The author has done a lot of research and brings us through the history in an engaging way. The impact on advertising through the different decades. This gives us a view of the social pressures and thinking as society changes.

References are given at the back of the book. I like when the authors do this.

Like many periods in our history women were excluded from the pages of our history books. Here they are very much acknowledged and given the rightful place they deserve.

The pregnancy test had a profound influence in recent times on women’s autonomy. Returning their control. The author also touched on the negative aspects which really got me reflecting on never ending battles women have in making decisions for themselves, over their own bodies and lives. The control that the medical profession had over women has taken along time to shift and the pregnancy test was part of this change. Women’s health I personally think is a barometer of how much autonomy women have. A barometer on how the world is viewing women. It seems to be a hard climb but there are more and more female doctors. Women are more and more taking responsibility of their own health and seek to be informed.

This book is worth reading as the debate on the positive and negative aspects of this tool in the lives of women. Please note it was written in 2020, technology and science are evolving all the time. As are the laws in many countries. Research in women’s health is a new area and is definitely progressing. Let’s hope that money continues to be invested into this area and the health of women globally. We read good and bad news on this front all over the world. One step forward to 20 steps back.
