This book grabbed my attention as I found sending various pieces of clothing to professional tailors for repair could be expensive. Then there was the moment when I remembered my grandmother and Mother sitting at the kitchen table repairing various garments. I needed to get moving to start learning how to repair. I have also been quite horrified at the volume of cloths that were been thrown away into land fill. This pull to repair instead of throwing out was strong.
Disclaimer I love embroidery; it is my form of meditation. So, to sit and repair should be an extension of these moments of quiet and calm. The bonus was the connection to my family, not just my grandmothers, mother and aunts but to my men folk. I didn’t see this a feminine role but as a connection to them in their daily life, I wanted to tell them I cared, and I was interested in their lives. In my hunt for guidance to get going I decided that a book would be the best way forward. Always trying to keep social media at bay. It’s so addictive.
This book did get me going in doing some repairs and most importantly knowing my limits and being comfortable to get he help from the professionals. It gave me confidence to get on and try.
I love the way it is laid out. The explanations are relatively easy to follow. I did find I needed to get organised to be more effective. I do enjoy the different techniques that are shown. A clear description on stitches used and equipment needed to be effective. Mending by hand or using a machine.
I have the book a year or so and find I go back to it regularly.
